Goals of the GNregistry
The primary goal of GNregistry
is to provide a place for all owners of Buick Grand Nationals, Buick Turbo Regals (T-Types, Turbo T’s, T’s and GNX’s),
Regal Sport Coupes, Riviera T-Types and the 20th Anniversary Turbo
Trans Am to
register their cars and details of ownership. These automobiles
occupy a significant place in the automotive History
of American cars, and this information is vital for
establishing a documented history of as many of the remaining number
of these cars as possible. Every owner and other interested parties
will have a place to go that will provide to a certification of the
lineage of each car for historical purposes, from this time forward.
GNregistry will certify details of each car’s past and current condition, including
history of ownership, and quality of restoration or preservation,
through the Registration process.
Another
goal of the GNregistry is to award owners of outstanding examples with distinguished certificates of status for their
vehicles. These Awards
will be recognized among auto enthusiasts and collectors as the most
reliable indicators of the quality of cars that win them. Several
different awards classes will be established based on the individual
type of turbo Buick, i.e., Grand National, T-Type, etc, and the
status of ownership and condition of the car (for example, cars that
still belong to the original owners will represent one class of
award). Initial details concerning these awards and how they will be
judged and presented to registrants have been developed, but final
specifications of each award will await broad input by the Turbo
Regal community.
The last specific goal of GNregistry is to serve as a repository and index of as
many current Owners
as possible. This registry will include a
specific GNregistry ID, an e-mail address, documented options,
performance modifications and a vehicle picture for each owner, if relevant. Current owners not listed are encouraged
to register their cars.

Registration form was removed due to Spam Marketing and my hard
drive crashed, so the internet and computers left a
bitter taste, but I am back. Feb. 1, 2008.

The registration
mechanism that we have established for GNregistry is a unique one
for automobile registries. We think that it will set a standard for
registries devoted to collector vehicles in the US and around the
globe. This can only enhance the values of surviving cars of the GN
class effective essentially immediately. And, as more and more owners
take advantage of the registration process, this value adding
quality of GNregistry will continue to accrue, especially to those
that are registered,
and the halo effect will benefit all.
Relationships
It is the intent of the founders of
GNregistry to try to fill certain important gaps in the coverage of
the GN class of cars by other organizations. By far the most
respected and important organization devoted to these cars is
GN/T-Type Enthusiast Organization (gnttype.org). This organization has a truly spectacular
web site and serves its members with an email list service and
bulletin board forum (which are set up for cross-over commentary
covering both the email list and the forum). GN/T-Type Organization has over
2000 members and has been functioning for ten years. It is safe to
say that it is probably the main reason (other that the cars
themselves), that the Turbo Regals have maintained such high resale
value compared to any other American car manufactured during the
1980’s. With all of its positive contributions, GN/T-Type
Organization has
not focused on anything in its activities that reflect the purposes
and goals of GNregistry. It is the wish of GNregistry to complement
the good work of GN/T-Type Organization by achieving the goals we have set
forth here. This can only help GN/T-Type Organization continue to carry out its
good work in the future.
Another important organization for GN enthusiasts is the Buick Gran
Sport Club of America (or GSCA). This organization was first
launched based on owners’ interest in the Buick Skylark and Gran
Sport models of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, but has
expanded its province with the advent of the GN class of Buicks in
the mid 1980’s. The Gran Sport Buicks, especially the Stage 1 and
GSX models of 1969 – 1971 were among the most desirable muscle
cars at this apex of the muscle car era, and they remain near the
top of the most coveted American Muscle cars today. However, the GN
class has captured a growing segment of the interest and coverage by
the membership of the GSCA. The main contribution of this
organization, from the perspective of Turbo Regal owners, is their
sponsorship of the race event known as the GS Nats (for Gran Sport
Nationals). This event is held in Bowling Green, Kentucky in May or
June each year and is the major racing event for, not only Gran
Sport owners, but also Turbo Regal owners.
This event also sponsors “car shows” for vehicles of outstanding
appearance but no standards have been put forth in the Buick
community for condition and restoration quality and awards that are
at all comparable to those by the true classic car clubs and
organizations, nor by the Corvette Club of America for those
vehicles. Given the long history of support of Buick performance
cars by the GSCA, it is the intent of the founders of the GNregistry
to support their continuing efforts, and seek their support for our
intention to establish national standards for condition and
appearance, as well as for restorations of the Turbo Regals, in
order to be a force leading to the long term preservation of these
cars.
Another event similar
in nature to the GS Nats is the racing event known as Buicks’ at
Bristol (Tennessee). This is not linked to an organization per se,
but has been organized. By an individual, Jim Haas, for the benefit
of the owners of the GN class interested in racing. This event has
also been very well accepted by the Turbo Regal racing enthusiasts
and represents a national event that the GNregistry wants to
recognize and support.
In addition to these national organizations, GNregistry recognizes the
valuable contributions that have been made by many regional and
local groups, clubs and racing events that are devoted to the Turbo
Regals. It is our wish to support the continuation of these
organizations and events in every possible manner. We encourage
these organizations to provide information about their activities
and calendar events such that we can keep a running national roster
and calendar of all events that may be of interest to owners of
Grand Nationals and Turbo Regals.
