GNregistry
Sponsors the prestigious Black Diamond Awards for its members.
There are Seven Classes within the Black Diamond Awards (BDA’s), divided into two
groups: the High Performance group, and the Show group.
The High
Performance group has four classes that are based primarily on competitive track performance, the XHP,
UHP, SHP and VHP classes, with the XHP (for Extreme High Performance)
being the fastest (7-10 second cars).
The Show group comprises three classes,
all of which emphasize condition and appearance, as much as or more than
acceleration performance. The first of these is Street, Strip and Show (SSS Class); these cars
must demonstrate a blend of competitive track performance and excellence
in vehicle condition and appearance. The next is Modified Show Car (MSC
Class), based entirely on exceptional condition and outstanding appearance. The last class is Factory Stock Show (FSS Class), based on pure factory originality, condition and
appearance. The tables below provide a link to help summarize the seven award classes within their groups:

Potential
Benefits of the Black Diamond Awards to Owners
Owners of the Buick Grand National and other Turbo Regals will benefit from achieving a
Black Diamond Award because one of these awards will become recognized as
the key symbol of a high quality vehicle – a car that has been
assiduously maintained and lovingly cared for by a discerning owner. Other
individuals in the universe of automotive enthusiasts will understand that
these cars, even when highly modified to be able to compete at the higher
levels of the competitive drag strip classes, were modified under exacting
standards, which are recognized not only by race sanctioning bodies, but
by a group of Grand National/Turbo Regal owners who are one of the most
critical, demanding, and professional in the whole realm off automotive
enthusiasts in the United States.
The
Grand Nationals and Other Turbo Regals that are judged of such quality to
capture any one of these awards will become known as the “Black
Diamonds”. The FSS Class of awards will be viewed as similar in nature
and intent to those for classic Corvettes, known as the “Bloomington
Gold” and “Bloomington Benchmark and Survivors” awards. There are no
comparable national awards for Corvettes with respect to the other Classes
of Black Diamond Awards described herein.
With
every succeeding year that GNregistry issues these awards and maintains
the Black Diamond Awards database, these cars and their awards will gain
greater prestige, and the cars themselves will become more and more
valuable. In addition, this award system will help prospective buyers of
used Grand National and Turbo Regals to estimate potential values of these
cars in the marketplace of collector cars.
Black Diamond Award Certificates and Window
Stickers
Owners of cars that
have achieved Black Diamond Awards will be eligible to purchase on
GNregistry's online
Storefront (click here to enter) the impressive and beautiful Black Diamond Award certificates.
In time, other accessories and products that symbolize this achievement
will be offered to awardees. The beautiful, silver foiled based Black
Diamond window stickers will be presented at no cost to all award cars.
The Black Diamond Award Certificates can be customized with the winning
cars' GNregistry ID noted on the Certificate itself; alternatively, the
"standard" certificate may be chosen. The standard certificates contain
striking photos of Turbo Buicks in action. The window stickers are equally
striking and signify that the particular car is one of the exclusive and
prestigious Turbo Buick Black Diamond Award cars.
Please note there is no obligation for GNregistry members to enter into competition for
Black Diamond Awards, and there are no costs to awardees for achieving the award,
nor any costs to awardees to be listed on GNregistry as a Black
Diamond Award winner. Fees for entrance into specific Black Diamond Award
classes may be required in time to cover the expenses to GNregistry to be
involved at specific venues for the purposes of providing these awards.
General
qualifying information and details regarding the Black Diamond Awards in
each of the seven award classes are presented in the following section.
Class
1: XHP – Extreme High
Performance in Competition (7 - 10 second cars)
Black
Diamond Awards designated by “XHP” will be granted based primarily on
high performance in competition in ¼-mile nationally recognized events,
in which the vehicle must have achieved ¼-mile elapsed time of less
than 11.00 seconds. In
addition the Black Diamond Awardees in this group will symbolize the Buick
“Fast with Class” traditions. Thus, these high performance cars must
also meet certain standards of consistency, safety and overall appearance.
Each award in this and in the other classes will be maintained in
GNregistry’s database, which will include the track certified times and
speed for the car in a competition 1/4 mile run.
These
awards can be presented to GNregistry member cars of which documents have
been presented that support the claimed performance goals, and of which
proof is presented that the vehicles overall condition regarding safety is
consistent with this performance (i.e., the sanctioning body’s
recommended modifications, such as roll bars/cages, etc. must have been
met). In addition, the vehicle’s appearance status must also be
acceptable although the standards for the latter may not be as demanding
as those in other Black Diamond Award categories. The date and
circumstances of each award will be maintained in GNregistry’s database.
A hypothetical
example of use of the BDA notation system to identify a car that has
achieved the Ultra High Performance Black Diamond Award would be the
following: BTR00131B.XHP.04. This would mean that GNregistry ID number
131A (for the sake of this example), has received a Black Diamond Award
for achieving a ¼-mile acceleration run in a competition event of an
elapsed time (ET) of less than 11.00 seconds, in the year 2004. This ID
will be listed on the Awards’ Page as BDA number: BGN00131B.XHP.04.
Class
2: UHP –Ultra High
Performance in Competition (11 second cars)
Black
Diamond Awards designated by “UHP” will be granted based primarily on
high performance in competition in ¼-mile nationally recognized events,
in which the vehicle must have achieved ¼-mile elapsed time of less
than 12.00 seconds and
greater than 10.99 seconds (in other words, “in the 11’s”). The
Awardees in this group will also symbolize the Buick “Fast with Class”
traditions in that these cars must meet high standards of reliability,
consistency, safety and overall appearance, in order to qualify for these
awards. Each award in this and in the other classes will be maintained in
GNregistry’s database, which will include the track certified times and
speed for the car in a competition 1/4 run.
These
awards can be presented to GNregistry member cars of which documents have
been presented that support the claimed performance goals, and of which
proof is presented that the vehicles overall condition regarding safety is
consistent with this performance (i.e., the sanctioning body’s
recommended modifications, such as roll bars/cages, etc. must have been
met). In addition, the vehicle’s appearance status must also be
acceptable. The standards for the latter may not be as demanding as are
those in other Black Diamond Award categories.
A hypothetical
example of use of the BDA notation system to identify a car that has
achieved the Ultra High Performance Black Diamond Award in GNregistry’s
database and public listings, would be the following: BTR00231B.UHP.04.
This would mean that GNregistry ID number 231B (for the sake of this
example), has received a Black Diamond Award for achieving a ¼-mile
acceleration run in a competition event of an elapsed time (ET) of less
than 12.00 seconds, in the year 2004. This ID will be listed on the
Awards’ Page as BDA number: BGN00231B.UHP.04.
Class 3:
SHP – Super High Performance in Competition (12 second cars)
Black Diamond Awards designated by
“SHP” will be granted based primarily on high performance in
competition in ¼-mile nationally recognized events, in which the vehicle
must have achieved ¼-mile elapsed time of less
than 13. 00 seconds and greater than 11.99 seconds (or “…in
the 12’s”). The Black Diamond Awardees in this group will also
symbolize the Buick “Fast with Class” traditions. In addition to their
documented time slips, the VHP Award cars must meet certain standards of
reliability, consistency, safety and overall appearance. Each award will be maintained in GNregistry’s database, which will
include the track certified times and speed for the car in a competition
1/4 mile run.
The VHP awards will be presented to
GNregistry cars of which documents have been presented that support the
claimed performance goals, and in which proof is presented that the
vehicles overall condition regarding safety is consistent with this
performance (i.e., the sanctioning body’s recommended modifications,
such as roll bars/cages, etc. must have been met). In addition, the
vehicle’s appearance status must demonstrate that it has continuously
received a high level of care and maintenance. The standards for the
appearance may be more demanding than that of the XHP and UHP vehicles,
but perhaps not as demanding as cars in the following Award categories
which follow.
An example of use of the BDA notation system to identify a
hypothetical car that has achieved the Super High Performance award would
be the following: BGN00331B.SHP.04. This would mean that GNregistry Grand
National ID number 331B (for the sake of this example) has received a
Black Diamond Award for achieving a ¼-mile acceleration run in a
competition event of an elapsed time (ET) of less than 14.00 seconds, in
the year 2004. This award will be listed on the Award’s Page as: BGN00331B.SHP.04.
Class 4:
VHP – Very High Performance in Competition (13 second cars)
Black Diamond Awards designated by
“VHP” will be granted based primarily on high performance in
competition in ¼-mile nationally recognized events, in which the vehicle
must have achieved ¼-mile elapsed time of less
than 14. 00 seconds and greater than 12.99 seconds (or “…13
second cars”).
1/4 run.
The standards for the
appearance may be more demanding than that of the XHP, UHP and SHP
vehicles, but perhaps not as demanding as cars in the following Award
categories which follow.
An example of use of the BDA notation system to identify a
hypothetical car that has achieved the Very High Performance award would
be the following: BGN00431B.VHP.04. This would mean that GNregistry Grand
National ID number 431B (for the sake of this example) has received a
Black Diamond Award for achieving a ¼-mile acceleration run in a
competition event of an elapsed time (ET) of less than 14.00 seconds, in
the year 2004. This award will be listed on the Award’s Page as:
BGN00431B.VHP.04.
Class
5: SSS – Street, Strip & Show (14 second, Show & Go Cars)
Awards designated by “SSS” will be
granted based on the general concept of modified street cars, in other
words, the “show and go” type of vehicle. These cars must have a
current certified ¼-mile track certified time slip that is less than
15.00 seconds and greater than 13.99 seconds (or “…14 second cars”).
But, of at least equal importance in the judging of the Show Class will be
the overall appearance and condition of the vehicle. In this respect,
these cars will be judged to standards of quality of appearance that are
much more stringent than the standards in the higher performance classes.
The general visual appeal of the Show cars will be very strongly
considered.
The major differences in this class vs.
the FSS cars (Factory Stock Show) is that a wide range of performance and appearance
modifications are allowed for the Show cars, including various types of
wheel and tire combinations; these cars will be permitted a wide latitude
here. The key judging quality will be how well the performance and
appearance modifications contribute to an overall enhancement of the
vehicle’s performance, appearance, and overall drivability -- including
handling, stopping, and vehicle stability.
A hypothetical example of use
of the BDA notation system to identify a car that has achieved the Super
Street and Strip Black Diamond Award in the year 2004, would be the
following: BTR00531B.SSS.04. This same notation will be listed on the
Award’s Page.
Class 6:
MSC - Modified Show Cars
Black Diamond Awards
designated by “ MSC” are not required to meet any standards of speed
and acceleration performance, or drivability, although they may be
modified sufficiently to reach performance levels equal to the SSS (Street, Strip & Show), or
faster classes of BDA awards. The point is that no aspect of vehicle
performance is to be included in the judging criteria. These are the
vehicles that are usually called, simply, “Show Cars”. These cars are
similar to the XHP cars in the sense that it would not be unusual to see
cars of this class, as well as the FSS class which follows, driven very
little on public highways or city streets, even being towed to shows, in
efforts to hold accumulated mileage as low as possible and reduce exposure
to adverse elements; judging will not be adversely affected by this
aspect.
Cars that achieve the
Black Diamond Awardees in this class will be expected to truly excel in
all aspects of appearance. Visual appeal is the major judging criterion
for awardees in this class. Thus, the MSC vehicles will be required to
meet especially demanding criteria for appearance and overall condition of
body and frame, paint, interior, engine and drive train. Judging will be
similar in this respect to that of the FSS and SSS cars, but with much
greater latitude concerning modifications to virtually any part of the
vehicle. However, modification of any part of the vehicle should not
detract from the visual appearance; in fact, all modifications will be
expected to contribute in a positive manner to what should be an
outstanding overall visual and aesthetic appeal of the car.
A hypothetical example
of use of the BDA notation system to identify a car that has achieved the
Exceptional Show Car Black Diamond Award in the year 2005, would be the
following: BGN00631C.MSC.05. This same notation will be listed on the
Awards’ Page.
Class 7: FSS - Factory
Stock
Show
Black Diamond Awards
designated as “FSS” will be granted for vehicles in superior overall
factory stock condition, in other words cars that are either original,
un-restored examples, or cars that have been accurately restored to new
stock condition. Whether original or restored, these vehicles must meet
highly demanding criteria for superior overall condition and appearance of
body and frame, paint, interior, engine and drive train; these cars must
also possess factory wheels as well as tires that are the same as or close
to those issued by the factory, either base or optional (e.g., the 16”
GNX wheel will be considered a factory option here for all Turbo Regals).
A few minor modifications may be acceptable (such as a low restriction air
filter in the stock canister, and a 2.5 inch factory styled, stainless
steel exhaust system, with a functional catalytic converter).
A
hypothetical example of the BDA notation system to identify a car that has
achieved this award would be the following: BGN00001A.FSS.04. This would
mean that GNregistry ID number 001A (for the sake of this example), has
received a Black Diamond Award for presenting a car in superior Factory
Stock condition in the year 2004. There will be no limit on the number of
cars that may achieve this, or any other category, of Black Diamond Awards
in any given year, and every award will be recorded and maintained in GNregistry’s database.
Listings of
Black Diamond Awards’ Cars in GNregistry
|
1) Award Members Table: All vehicles that have achieved Black Diamond
Awards in any of its seven classes will be flagged by the abbreviation.
2) Within the summary categories on the
“Data Summaries” page:
The Data Summaries page will contain a section of its own
devoted solely to the Black Diamond cars. The complete awardees
information that is described for each of the Black Diamond divisions
above will be used in the Data Summaries’ Page with each member’s
GNregistry serial ID, including the last full five character award suffix
of each awardees (such as: BGN00631C.SSS.04 ).
3) On the Black Diamond Awardees’
page:
All Black Diamond Awardees will be
listed on a special Black Diamond Awardees’ table shown above. Awardees
will be encouraged to submit write-ups and photos of their cars for
inclusion on this page. There will be no limit on
the number of cars that may achieve any category of Black Diamond Awards
in any given year or years. Cars may also compete for BDA’s in more than
one category of these awards. While all awards achieved by every
GNregistry vehicle will be maintained in the registry’s database, the
annotated GNregistry ID AWARD Members List table will contain
only the BDA suffix notations.
|
Applications,
Rules, and Judging
(subject
to change by GNregistry administration)
1.
|
To qualify for these awards, you must be a GNregistry member and submit an award application, along with a minimum of 9 recent
photos for judging. NOTE: 5 of the best photos will be used for the award
page. |
2.
|
Whenever
possible, GNregistry will enlist other members of the Turbo Regal
Community
to help in the development of criteria for judging Awardees for these
Awards. These criteria will be renewed and updated as required each year.
|
3.
|
Black
Diamond Awards will be given out at two national Buick Turbo
Regal events each year. However, all award classes may not be represented at
events.
|
4.
|
The first BDA’s
will be presented in 2006 in the four High Performance in
Competition Classes (XHP, UHP, SHP and VHP). These awards will be
presented to GNregistry members who qualify based on their ¼ mile
ET performance as certified by a copy of a certified track time slip
that identifies the specific member’s car. Owners must also submit
four photos of their cars, one of the interior, one of the engine
compartment, one from the passenger/front side (~ 45 degree angle),
the second from the drivers/rear side (~
45 degree angle);
[see the photograph examples above].
|
5.
|
Application for an Award and all supporting data may be submitted on a one
time only basis per year, between January 1 and November 30, of each year, beginning in 2003.
|
6.
|
In 2004 and
beyond, all Black Diamond Awards will be based on a majority vote of
a panel of five judges, three selected by and from the membership of
GNregistry.org, and two similarly selected from the GN/TR community.
The five-judge panel will elect a chairman from its five members.
The panel will be reconstituted each year between January 1 and
January 15 by a method acceptable to the prior panel.
|
7.
|
There
will be no minimum number of Awards granted at each event, every car that
meets the specifications, according to
the judges, will qualify for an award. |
8.
|
All awardees are encouraged to renew their awards annually, if
possible. However,the
last awarded BDA will always remain part of the GNregistry ID number of
all those who achieve any BDA award.
|
9.
|
When a car
passes to another owner its award(s) remain(s) valid. In a case such as
this the award serial ID number will remain the same in the database
(except for the change in the number of owners ID suffix – B, C, D,
etc.), as long as the new owner renews registration of the car with
GNregistry. As of now, there is "No Fee" for new owner renewals.
|
10.
|
Whenever
possible, the applicants entry, judging, and the presentation of the Black
Diamond Awards, will be carried out at “live’ Buick racing, show, or
other enthusiasts’ events. However, a legitimately constituted panel of
judges, as described above, has the discretion to grant awards through
other venues in which they
are able to make the necessary value judgments. This may include
specifically developed “filing by mail” process, with specified photos
& affidavits”, a process that may be judged to be adequate for
particular awards at particular times.
|
11.
|
In general, judging criteria for performance vs. overall condition
and factory-like appearance, as we look at cars going from Class 1 through
Class 7, may be viewed in the following manner: weighting is much more
skewed on ¼ mile performance criteria compared to overall condition and
factory-like appearance in Classes 1, 2, 3, and 4, while the inverse will
be the case in classes 5, 6 and 7; similarly, the quality of not only
factory-like appearance but indeed overall factory stock parts, (which
might be called “stock-likeness”, or “stockness”), will be
expected to be highest, as far as judging, in Class 7 (i.e., 10 out of 10
points), but matter very little in Class 1 (i.e., ~2 points?). Between
Class 1 and 7, the “stockness” and performance qualities can be viewed
as inverse regression lines which cross at the SSS Class.
|
12.
|
In the actual judging of vehicles, judges will utilize specific
criteria and check sheets to award numerical scores based on qualities
such as: attention
to detail, originality, condition specific parts (lists), cleanliness
(lists), overall quality of modifications (and if they complement and
improve original designs), overall functionality, esthetics of body,
engine and interior modifications, potential impact on aftermarket
industry, the broad sense of
potential contribution to the Buick TR/GN community. A minimum score in
each Class will be required to attain the particular Black Diamond Award.
|

Multiple Black Diamond Award Winners
Guidelines
Black Diamond Award winners are not eligible for a new award in the same
class during the year following the year of the first award in that class.
However, BDA award winning cars will be eligible for new BDA awards in
different BDA award Classes within the following year, contingent on
demonstration that the car(s) qualify for a different BDA award class by
submission of a successful application for an award in a new class,
including a complete new set of photos.
As for new BDA awards in the same class, after a lapse of one year from
the year of the first BDA award in a particular class, a winning car from
a prior year will again be eligible for a new award in that same class in
which the earlier award was granted. In other words, all award winning
cars in the FSS Class in 2004 will NOT be eligible for another BDA Award
in the FSS Class in 2005 but will be eligible for the FSS Class Award once
again in 2006. However, any of these FSS cars that qualify in another
Class (such as SSS, for example), during the following year, can achieve
the BDA award in the new Class, provided they submit an award winning
application, including a new set of photos.
Multiple BDA awards for any given car are to be encouraged within these
guidelines, including those within the same class every other year.
Achieving a new award within the same class on this schedule indicates
that such car(s) are being maintained and preserved to an award winning
level. |
